"Beket Ata" Mosque in Almaty

YEAR FOUNDED: 2002 | RENOVATION: 2022

The “Beket Ata” Mosque is located in the Shanyrak-1 neighborhood of the Alatau District in Almaty, at 109v Otemisuly Street. Originally built in 2002 with funding from brothers Galymzhan and Berik Kaniyev, it has become a significant spiritual center for the local community.

In 2022, twenty years after its opening, the mosque underwent a major renovation financed by the Berik & Bayan Kaniyev Foundation. The investment totaled 400 million tenge. As a result, the building's area increased from 250 to 650 m², and its capacity expanded to accommodate up to 800 people. A new 19-meter minaret and a 7-meter dome were constructed, the women's prayer areas were expanded, and new facilities such as a library, lecture halls, and service rooms were added.

The surrounding grounds were also enhanced with an open-air prayer area for 1,500 people, a dining hall and kitchen for 150 guests, and restrooms designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities. The territory was landscaped with trees, firs, and flowers.

Today, the “Beket Ata” Mosque is not only a place of worship but also a center for spiritual education and social support for the residents of Alatau District.
